About
Hello, I am Valérie, a Mycologist and an Artist based in France.
Fascinated by fungi and driven by observation, study and research as a Mycologist, while being drawn by materials and textures as an Artist, I am aiming to capture the bewitching charm of fungi.
For my sculptures, I adhere strictly to sustainable practices, using recycled paper only, homemade (edible) glutinous rice glue, inspired by Japanese sokui, and ink. Considering the varying nature of the material (from cardboard to silk paper crops), I have to adapt and reinvent, engaging in a systematic exploration, and that’s precisely what captivates me.
I always start by drawing blueprints and experimenting with available paper types. As each species is unique and requires a different approach, this process is crucial and can take various forms.
Next, I prepare my paper clay, a meticulous process essential for sculpting specific elements of my artwork. The preparation involves several stages over multiple days.
At last, throughout the entire process, I constantly seek out that missing piece that will bring my mushroom to life.
